Auto Collision FAQs:

Initially after an accident takes place, the first thing you need to do is stop your vehicle, check that all passengers are safe and injury free, and then call the police.

If there are no injuries and your vehicle is drivable, then move it to the side of the road, if this is not possible turn on your hazard lights and either wait for the police to arrive (more serious accident) or start exchanging insurance and contact details with the other vehicle involved (less serious accident).
If you feel that you or one of your passengers may be injured following a collision, then you need to call 911 straight away for an ambulance or other emergency services.

From there, you need to see the relevant medical care practitioner for an assessment of your injury. Then, file an injury accident report with the police and contact your insurance company with a Notice of Loss and Proof of Claim Form. You will subsequently be made aware of the benefits that you may be entitled to.
It is crucial that you exchange contact and insurance details with all parties involved. It is also wise to take pictures and, if possible, jot down any details pertaining to the accident. If the other party involved refuses to exchange details, then be sure to obtain their license plate number as well as a detailed vehicle and driver description.
You need to contact your insurance provider and inform them of relevant details including: how the collision took place; if there are any injured parties and the severity of these injuries; and any damage to vehicles or adjoining property.
It is important that you don’t accept blame for the accident at the scene. This means that you must not sign any statement assuming liability or make verbal commitments to pay for the damages that occurred. You must also never accept money or agree to forget about the accident altogether.
It is important that in advance of any repair work being undertaken, both you and your insurer know how much it will cost. That is why at Platinum Collision Center Calgary we are proud of our tradition of working with certified insurance companies to give you, the driver, the most cost efficient means of repairing your vehicle. Our repair cost estimate includes: what repairs are needed, the parts that will need to be repaired or possibly replaced and whether new or second hand parts are being used.

No. Your insurer may have given you a list of auto body repair shops to use, but that does not mean you are limited to those options. It is always your choice to where you bring your car. In many cases your insurance company will “steer” you towards the cheapest price without considering the quality of the work.
As is common with small accidents, the person responsible for the collision does not want to go through insurance and would rather pay for the damage upfront to keep their premium from going up. This is perfectly fine, but keep in mind, that there will be no guarantee that there will be more money in the future if further repairs are needed as a result of this accident. Your insurance company will stay with you every step of the way to make sure all repairs are done properly and to your satisfaction.
